The benefit of the 2020 AgBioEn Kooyong Classic is that it provides a serious final hit out before the upcoming Australian Open, and that is exactly what the players who took to the famous centre court got in testing conditions.

In a match lasting more than two hours, Russian tennis queen Maria Sharapova took on rising German talent Laura Siegemund with the latter taking the first set 7-6 (7-4) before the umpire and both players agreed to end the second set at 5-5.

Sharapova set the pace four the tournament’s new innovation, AgBioEn Point Bank, in winning nine consecutive points. If that remains the longest winning point streak, AgBioEn will donate $9,000 to bushfire relief plus an additional $1,000 for a minimum donation of $10,000.

World 20th ranked Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) and Borna Coric (CRO) went to a tie-breaker set with Dimitrov prevailing 6-3 5-7 10-8.

In the final match of the day, Canadian Milos Raonic defeated Korean Soonwoo Kwon 6-3 6-2.

The day two schedule begins at 1:00pm tomorrow:

Marin Cilic (CRO) v Soonwoo Kwon (KOR)

Marc Polmans (AUS) v Matteo Berrettini (ITA)

CoCo Vandeweghe (USA) v Jennifer Brady (USA)

The AgBioEn Kooyong Classic will conclude on Thursday.
