Denis achieved a new career-high ranking 11 times in 2017 and 11 times in 2018, peaking at number 23 on 11 June 2018. He became the number one Canadian by passing Milos Raonic on 21 May 2018. Shapovalov broke into the top 200, top 100 and top 50 in 2017. As an 18-year-old on 9 October 2017, he became the youngest top 50 player since Rafael Nadal, 18, on 1 November 2004.
