Started playing tennis at age 7. Father, John, started work driving taxis and now serves as his coach; mother, Ady, was a biomedical scientist; sister, Sara, also plays tennis. Favourite surface is grass. Idols growing up were Pete Sampras, Ian Thorpe and Michael Jordan.

Hobbies include basketball, football and table tennis. Likes Eminem and 50 Cent. He is coached part-time by former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt. Reached a career-high ranking of 17 on January 11, 2016 after advancing to the Brisbane Semi-Finals.
