McNamee Cherry and Culbert to spearhead SBS broadcast of 2019 Kooyong ClassicPosted on December 27, 2018
The 2019 Kooyong Classic welcomes an exciting new broadcast team with Australian tennis great Paul McNamee offering insight, analysis and on-court access to players across all three days of the tournament alongside Tiffany Cherry and Dave Culbert.
With sporting broadcast innovation courtesy of Harvey Silver and Silver Spoon Productions the 2019 Kooyong Classic will offer unique access to players live and online on SBS throughout the tournament.
In anticipation of the coverage, McNamee notes “it’s going to be more interactive, more engaging, more insight, and more access…There’s a really good opportunity to find out what’s going on behind the scenes, and find out what the players think about some of the biggest storylines that are going on in the sport.”
On the commentary team joining him in the broadcast booth, McNamee commends Culbert’s “massive history in all sports, particularly Track and Field, and his detail and insight into athletic performance is amazing”.
“Tiffany, of course, was part of the ground breaking effort to get more women involved in AFL, and she’ll add a lot to the team. I think we’ve got a really good team for SBS”.
In consideration of the strong field coming to Kooyong in 2019, McNamee praised Bernard Tomic’s efforts to jump back inside the top 100, declaring it a potential “comeback of the year.”
“He said some things he should regret I think, and he admitted to me personally that he had checked out…[then] to come back, qualify for Roland Garros and then win a tournament, that’s really, really hard to do. What Bernard did was remarkable.”
With World No. 5 Juan Martin Del Potro also honing his preparation at Kooyong on return from injury, McNamee noted “it is a coup to have him here and especially with the goodwill he’s received being able to make a final of the US Open having won it in 2009.”
“Whatever happens between now and the 8th, 9th and 10th of January, he and his entourage will want to know what it’s really like in a match situation where it’s not just a practice session.”
The 2019 Kooyong Classic will be broadcast live and streamed online on SBS from 11 am to 4 pm on each day of the event.
