2017 marked the first year to reintroduce the women’s competition in the annual event after a long hiatus. Yanina Wickmayer (Belgium) defeated Saurian Cirstea (Romania).

Described as a classic rivalry, US pros Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi came head to head in the 2002 final on the Kooyong courts. Sampras took the title that year after two runner up places in 1995 and 1997, both against Michael Chang while Agassi saw victories at Kooyong in 2000, 2001 and 2003.
